This was the first song written together by Claire Roche and John McGovern. Roche had gotten a catchy song stuck in her head, and so began to write the chorus for the song. Since they had just previously finished A Very Jimmy Christmas, McGovern and Roche decided to turn it into one of The Jimmys' songs, and so "Girl in the Cafeteria" was written in about fifteen minutes.
